WEDNESDAY MORNING, JUNE 16

  1. A concert of praise presented by the Choir & Orchestra of Johnson Ferry Baptist Church, Marietta, Georgia, was directed by Mark Cottingham (GA), minister of music.

  2. Congregational praise and worship was led by Stephen Allen (CO), minister of music, First Southern Baptist Church, Pueblo.

  3. Shannon Scott (NC), pastor, Mount Vernon Baptist Church, Raleigh, led in prayer.

  4. A theme interpretation entitled "He beheld the city and wept" was given by Jay Strack (FL), president, The Jay Strack Evangelistic Association and Millennium Chorus, Inc., Orlando.

  5. Dellanna W. O'Brien (AL), executive director-treasurer, Birmingham, and Wanda S. Lee, president, Woman’s Missionary Union, presented the Woman's Missionary Union report.

  6. President Paige Patterson announced the time for the fourth election of officers for Recording Secretary.

  7. Charles W. Sullivan (IN) nominated John Yeats (OK).

  8. Since there were no other nominations, President Paige Patterson called on Lee Porter to cast the Convention ballot for John Yeats.

  9. President Paige Patterson declared John Yeats as Recording Secretary.

  10. Ken Whitten, chairman, Committee on Order of Business, made a motion to move the Order of Business forward. Motion carried.

  11. Joel Allen led in congregational praise and singing.

  12. President Paige Patterson recognized John Yeats, Recording Secretary, editor, Baptist Messenger, Oklahoma City. Yeats directed a messenger information survey for the Executive Committee.

  13. Al Jackson (AL), chairman, presented first report of the Committee on Resolutions. 29 resolutions were received and 14 reported.

  14. Al Jackson moved the adoption of Resolution 1. Resolution 1 was adopted.

  15. Al Jackson moved the adoption of Resolution 2. President Paige Patterson took Point of Personal Privilege to speak on behalf of Resolution 2. Resolution 2 was adopted.

  16. Al Jackson moved the adoption of Resolution 3. Wiley Drake (CA) moved to amend the resolution. The amendment was seconded. Drake spoke for the amendment. Paul Kaneshiro (HI), Resolutions Committee member, spoke against the amendment. President Paige Patterson reread amendment and called for vote on the amendment. The amendment failed. President Paige Patterson called for vote of Resolution 3. Resolution 3 was adopted.

  17. Al Jackson moved the adoption of Resolution 4. Carry Kimbrell (MS) moved to amend the resolution. Pat Pajak (IL), Resolution Committee member, spoke against the amendment. Vote was taken on the amendment to the resolution. Amendment failed. Wiley Drake moved to amend the resolution. Amendment seconded. Drake spoke for his amendment. Jackson spoke against the amendment. Vote on Drake’s amendment. Clear majority was not indicated, therefore ballot vote was taken.

  18. Lee Porter instructed the convention in the ballot vote.

  19. Al Jackson moved the adoption of Resolution 5. Resolution 5 was adopted.

  20. Al Jackson moved the adoption of Resolution 6. Resolution 6 was adopted.

  21. Al Jackson moved the adoption of Resolution 7. Resolution 7 was adopted.

  22. Al Jackson moved the adoption of Resolution 8. Resolution 8 was adopted.

  23. Al Jackson moved the adoption of Resolution 9. Resolution 9 was adopted. Lorraine Simms (VA) moved that the remainder of the resolutions be voted on in block. Chair ruled her out of order at that time. Resolution 9 was adopted.

  24. Lorraine Simms (VA) moved that Resolutions 10-14 be voted on in block. Bob Lilly (MD) opposed the motion. Motion failed.

  25. Al Jackson moved the adoption of Resolution 10. Norman Cates (FL) asked for recall of Resolution 6. Chair ruled Cates out of order at that time. Wiley Drake moved to amend Resolution 10. Gerald Harris (GA), Resolution Committee member, spoke against the amendment. Timothy Faber (MO) spoke in favor of the amendment. Ken Holcombe (SC) spoke against the amendment. Bill Devine (CA) spoke in favor of the amendment. A. J. Smith (KY) spoke against the amendment. David Urban (IL) spoke for the amendment. Motion to amend passes. Resolution 10 was adopted as amended.

  26. Lee Porter reported the result of the ballot on Drake’s amendment (Item 150) to Resolution 4: 3629 ballots were cast: 2316 Yes, 1313 No. Amendment to Resolution carried. Resolution 4 was adopted as amended.

  27. Norm Cates (FL) made a motion to reconsider Resolution 6. Motion seconded. Cates spoke for his motion. Greg DeMarco (NM), Resolutions Committee member, spoke against reconsideration. Motion to reconsider failed.

  28. The Ethics and Religious Liberty report was presented by Richard D. Land (TN), president. Steven Wright (TX), chairman, ERLC Board of Trustees, was recognized to present a special award to Richard Land. Land’s report included an emphasis on World Hunger Fund initiatives. He also stated that Southern Baptists refuse to be silent in the public square. Rudy Yakym (IN) spoke in favor of the report and of Richard Land. Chris Keathly (TX) asked a question about including tobacco in list of abused drugs. Land responded.

  29. Evangelizing International Cities was presented by Nilson Fanini (VA), president, Baptist World Alliance, McLean.

  30. President Paige Patterson announced the election of Registration Secretary.

  31. Mike Tignor (TX) nominated Lee Porter.

  32. Tom Atwood (MS) nominated Teresa Norris.

  33. The president called on John Yeats, Recording Secretary, to instruct the convention on the ballot for Registration Secretary.

  34. Tommy C. French, Jr. (LA), chairman, presented the Committee on Committees report as printed on pages 10-11 of the SBC Bulletin, First Day, Part II, and moved its adoption. The report was adopted.

  35. O.S. Hawkins (TX), president and chief executive officer, Dallas, presented the Annuity Board report. Hawkins challenged the convention to: (1) Adopt an annuitant; and (2) Take responsibility for your life and resources. Jerry Vines (FL) spoke a word of encouragement to Hawkins. Dan Chandler (AL) raised questions about medical insurance. Matthew Sickling (KY) raised a question about medical insurance.

  36. John Yeats reported the result of the vote for Registration Secretary. 3556 ballots were cast: 2205 Porter, 1351 Norris.

  37. President Paige Patterson declared Lee Porter as Registration Secretary.

  38. Congregational praise and worship was led by Joe Carroll (TX), minister to senior adults, Hyde Park Baptist Church, Austin.

  39. Charles Page (NC) was recognized to read scripture.

  40. The convention message was given by Ralph Smith (TX), pastor emeritus, Hyde Park Baptist Church, Austin.

  41. The benediction was given by Jerry Falwell (VA), chancellor, Liberty University, senior pastor, Thomas Road Baptist Church, Lynchburg.
