Sid Smith III and his mother, Arnetta, receive a posthumous Distinguished Alumni Award from Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary for Sid Smith, who died earlier this year. The award was presented by Jeff Iorg, GGBTS president, at the alumni and friends seminary luncheon at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville. Smith was the first director of the Florida Baptist Convention's African American ministries division from May 1994 until his retirement in 2005. He was instrumental in helping start 400 predominantly African American congregations as well as instituting a program department of church development to assist pastoral and lay leadership in African American churches.

Richard Land, president of The Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission, hugs Cindy Bush as she accepts a posthumous award for her husband, Russ, a former professor and academic dean at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary at the seminary luncheon June 24 at the Kentucky Exposition Center between sessions of the Southern Baptist Convention annual meeting at the location. The L. Russ Bush Center for Faith and Culture bears his name on campus in the seminary’s newest building, Patterson Hall. He served as director of the Center until his death in 2008. The Center, which was established in 2006, is a ministry of the seminary.
